Principals are notoriously busy—everywhere at once and yet nowhere to be found. Sometimes it’s hard to find time to sit down and have a conversation with students that doesn’t revolve around discipline.
Do your work out in the open. Remove the barriers. Invite students into your world by visiting theirs. Get a firsthand look at what’s really going on in the halls and in students’ heads.
How can you hack it?
-Stand at the school entrance, and greet students as the day begins.
-Work in the cafeteria or relocate your desk to the foyer for the day.
-Eat lunch in the cafeteria with students for a week.
-Grab a few students, stand in a circle, and ask what’s on their minds for 10 minutes.
